The Orthodox Center for the Advancement of Biblical studies
began as an informal gathering of Holy Cross Greek Orthodox
School of Theology and St Vladimir's Orthodox Theological
Seminary alumni in 1999 to pursue advanced biblical studies
through annual meetings. The members recognized that additional
resources were necessary to augment their seminary education
and enhance their various ministries in the Orthodox Church.
With this in mind, a pan-Orthodox non-profit organization
was established to develop, promote and publish research
in the areas of biblical studies, homiletics and religious
education in the Orthodox Christian Faith.
"Till I come, attend
to the public reading of scripture, to preaching, to teaching."
1 Timothy 4:13

As Fr. John Breck points
out in his book, Scripture in Tradition, historically, the
Orthodox tradition has possessed a wealth of biblical resources
in the form of biblical homilies. Yet where is one to find
such resources today? Our early church fathers, who dedicated
their whole lives to the study, teaching, and preaching
of Scripture, would be scandalized by the contemporary lack
of interest in Biblical Studies!
The Orthodox Center for the
Advancement of Biblical Studies was established to educate,
inspire and challenge the faithful to recognize the centrality
of sound biblical interpretation for life in Christ. The
last 50 years have seen a wonderful renewal in the areas
of liturgy, music, iconography, patristics, and monasticism.
OCABS is part of a growing community of faithful in the
Orthodox Church who are embracing the same renewal in the
development of serious Scriptural studies and preaching.
The work of OCABS includes:
-
Promoting the awareness of the centrality
of the Gospel in the Christian life.
-
Providing resources for those who
teach and preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ on the parish
level.
-
Conducting seminars in the area of
advanced biblical studies.
-
Developing a foundation to provide
material support for those pursuing advanced degrees
and for special research and publishing projects.
